Dove Tabernacle

Seen in The Burrell Collection in Glasgow last week

The label says

<< Eucharist Dove. French , Limosges ; c 1225-50.

Originally suspended over an altar and containing the consecrated bread used in the mass .

copper-gilt and champlev enamelled >>

There were some other interesting things there - and I'll try and get back soon and take some better pics smile

Meantime - could I please ask that discussion of this Dove Tabernacle takes place on the thread in Faith and Worship

There is a tabernacle similar to that in the Monastery of the Byzantine Catholic Discalced Carmelite Nuns in Pennsylvania. It is beautiful!

Thank you for sharing that with us!

we had a slightly less stylized one that hung from wire above our altar when I grew up...

From a distance, it had the effect of seeming to be suspended or floating.

Very cool.

Please see my "Images from NEPA" posting of pictures on page 4 of the gallery. There is a picture of the nun's chapel and you can just see the dove-shaped pyx suspended over the altar.

A similar tabernacle hung above the Holy Table at Sacred Heart Byzantine Catholic Church in Livonia, MI some years ago when last I was in the area. Father Myron Hornyak was pastor at the time.
