Here are a couple of more photos for posting. One is of our Director (and my Project Advisor) Father Joseph Allen blessing us in the Ligonier Conference Center Chapel, and the other is Shanksville. Every year, the Doctoral students and students that stay for both weeks go to the 9-11 site for a Trisagion Service after Sunday Liturgy between Weeks 1 and 2 in Johnstown. Afterward, a wonderful parish family near the 9-11 site hosts us for a delicious afternoon meal.

It looks like it says something on the back of the Royal Doors. "Pull To Open"?! biggrin

Well, Dave, if you look at the direction and think about it, it's probably a lot more likely that they say "PUSH to open." LOL.

Having served there on many diaconal retreats, they indeed say pull to open. Although I have never seen Holy Doors that open outwards, so one wonders why the instruction is necessary.

Oh, by the way, you can see that the priest here isn't wearing the sticharion under his phelonion and epitrachelion. I was just discussing this in another thread and asked the question why this seems to be customary/common among Melkites and Antiochians, but isn't seen nearly as much in the Greek and Slavic world (though I did note that in the funeral procession of Abp. Christodoulos of Athens that the priests weren't wearing sticharia (pl?). Is there a reason for this? I feel I must be missing something very obvious.

Dear Alexis,

I'm sure that if the priest were serving the Divine Liturgy, he would be wearing a sticharion under his phelonion. It is universal Orthodox practice for a priest to wear a sticharion when serving the Divine Liturgy. It matters not whether he is Antiochian, Greek, Russian , Ukrainian, Serbian, or whatever. Surely he is serving Great Vespers or Orthros, services where the priest dons a phelonion over his rasson (riassa) and epitrachelion.

I am not certain this will work, but here are some additional pictures of the iconography and the beauty of the village from one of deacon retreats.

I have been at Antiochean Village several times and have always found the iconography of the Last Supper to be very striking for its portrayal of Judas crawling and grasping across the holy table.

What a contrast to the kenosis of our Lord who deemed equality with God "not something to be grasped" (Philippians canticle)
