I read this story, and I can not figure why the EU would have a problem with the clause in the concordat that is causing a crisis.

The key issue in dispute is a "conscience clause" in the concordat, stipulating that citizens of Slovakia will not be forced to participate in activities that offend their religious beliefs.
The EU better worry more about how Turkey intends to handle this if their Moslems are offended?

I can't understand why Pope John Paul II pushed the Polish people to approve membership in the Atheist and Anti-Christian EU.

Why pick on Slovakia and not Turkey? They're not afraid of Slovakia. Yesterday I would have maybe suggested that over here things are a little better... but with that decision out of the US Cicuit Court from NY.. perhaps they're not.

Mayhaps he hoped they would be a small bit of Christian influence?

I suspect the Pope saw the greater need for Poland to be firmly tied to the west so as to protect it from Russian stand over tactics in the future. Hand in hand with this the Pope was an optomist who believed that people and institutions are able to change for the good. It like lottery you can't win the prize if you dont buy a ticket. Of course JP II loved challenges.
