Myles,

That interview was almost two years ago. (?)

Ha ha. That is pretty funny.

Uh huh teen its an old interview but in light of the pdf about the Moscow Patriarchate's foreign policy I thought it would be worth posting a link to. Fr Taft's advice to the Ukrainian Greek Catholics and his statements about the private sentiments of the Muscovite higher clergy is most interesting, nai?

They certainly are, but perhaps we should take Father's advice and say to hell with Moscow; let's not worry about them anymore!

Wudduya say? wink

If so, then I think we should stop calling ourselves "Christians".

Myles,

Thank you for the link to Father Taft's interview. I can honestly say this has filled in some missing gaps of information for me.

I can now support 100% the formalization of the Patriarch of Kiev of the Greek Catholic Church, based upon Father Taft's information and additional provided history. I realize my opinion is worth squat, but if ever I get the opportunity to promote this, I will.

Out of curiosity to those more intimately connected with the Greek Church in Ukraine, is the Synod of Bishops in full agreement to create the Patriarch or are there dissenters?

Take care. Got to find some phone booths to talk to some people. :-)

Michael

Peter,

Well, take it up with Fr. Taft, but for my part I don't think it's useful to continue to try and negotiate with the nonnegotiable.

So then, does that mean I shouldn't try to continue this conversation?

Now, now. Moscow has some lovely churches, wonderful museums - and I just received a beautiful new book of ecclesiastical art from Moscow (but it was actually printed in Slovenia, as one discovers by reading the fine print).

It is not a true interview, it was recorded without a consense of f. Taft by a breakfast, if I remember well.

Some weeks after, on http://www.ugcc.org.ua/ there was published a true interview with prof. archim. R. F. Taft, SJ.

Hello all,
I'm new on the forum and I want to extend greetings to all of you. I have been following the posts for a while and wanted to chime in occasionally.
Two quotes I really enjoyed in the Fr. Taft piece were, "One thing that characterizes Ukrainian Catholics is that they go to church, and they practice." and "The Patriarch of Moscow is not a pope."
Andreios, that's not fair, I can't read that stuff!! wink

I am sorry, but my english is not so go to translate the text. The first phrase of Taft´s reply:

- At first I have to note, that it was not an interview but a simply conversation with a journalist. ...

Than Taft says that he would review his words, if he would know that it will be printed. But the substance would be the same.

As it happens, I do read Russian. Father Taft is saying that while he might have used different wording for publications, he stands over the substance - which is, I should think, more than sufficient. Nor do I believe that Father Taft is quite so naive as to think that a "simple conversation with a journalist" from the National Catholic Reporter on those questions was just a pleasant way of spending an hour or so! It would be interesting to know just how the journalist recorded the discussion - Father Taft has made no accusation of a clandestine recording device.
