There is an interesting on-line article entitled "A Calvinist Looks at Orthodoxy" that I found online in the December 1988 edition of "New Horizons" (the magazine of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church). Written by Rev. Jack D. Kinneer, a Presbyterian minister who studied at St. Vladimir's Orthodox Theological Seminary (OCA) the article provides a unique insight in how Protestants view Orthodox Christianity.

Some of the authors critiques are quite accurate: many Orthodox do equate Orthodoxy with ethnicity (Byzantine Catholics do this, too). The doctrinal critiques seem to indicate that in his time spent at St. Vladimir's did not acquaint him with an authentic understanding our Faith. You can read it for yourself at:

There's a lot that could be said. I was a bit disappointed in reading the article, however. Perhaps it was because the article was written for members of his church but it seemed to lack a real analysis. It mentioned things that would traditionally be problems for Calvinists (such as prayers to Mary or monasticism) without much comment. When I was a Protestant many of my best friends were Reformed. They were keen into their apologetics. I would have expected more analysis from this author.

I heard there was a larger Protestant critique of Orthodoxy published by the Christian Research Institute (CRI--the late Walter Martin's group). Anyone have a URL for that? I'd like to read that article.

In Christ,

I just came across another Reformed Protestant critique of Orthodoxy. It is at:

There's a lot of discussion going on there...
