I came across this tidbit this evening while doing some reading about my patron saint, Saint Anthony the Great. I thought I would throw this out for some of our posters to read and comment on.

In IC XC,
Father Anthony+

Quote:
Someone asked Abba Anthony, 'What must one do in order to please God?' The old man replied, 'Pay attention to what I tell you: whoever you may be, always have God before your eyes, whatever you do, do it according to the testimony of the Holy Scriptures; in whatever place you live do not easily leave it. Keep these three precepts and you will be saved.'
—Saying of Saint Anthony the Great

I think that it means that one's circumstances in life can be different: one can be poor or one can be rich, one can live in luxury or one can live in squalor, one can have few problems or one can carry many crosses, but that no matter what you do in your mundane moments of whatever your particular life is--that you should do it with the precepts of God first and foremost and remember Him always first and foremost, and if you do, then you will be saved.

I also take this to mean that when the world and its lures beckon, fight the temptation, and let Christ and your faith beckon instead...not an easy call in the material and relatively comfortable world we live in, but a necessary one for our salvation.

In Christ our Lord,
Alice
