I personally think this is watering down the scriptures too far, but read this: CNN - 100 Minute Bible

Fr. Anthony,

I have been praying about some sort of Bible Study or guide we could all use here on the Scripture forum. Maybe something on the web, or a study guide that we could use on a daily basis and then discuss it at least once a week. We could even set a certain time and then use the chat room to discuss it.

Would you have any thoughts on this matter?

Dear Pani Rose,

There is bible software out on the market, which can be used in a sort of predetermined way. Probably the best way, is to have the scripture from the lectionary posted from the lectionary cycle of the Eastern Church, and then have it posted for a 24 hours discussion only, in which the thread we be closed at the posting of the next lections. The thread can remain for reference and edification, but not added to after the 24 hour period. This I believe would have to be passed through the moderator of this section and our Forum Administrator for approval.

Thoughts on this idea are welcome.

Hummm, this is interesting. Of course, it would depend on how well it is written . I would think that it could get people interested in the bible itself and that could turn out to be a good thing. But I don't see how in 100 minutes much more could be there but general themes and summaries. And how could one ever grasp the richness of the scriptures this way?

But, if it would jump start someone... wink

Reminds me of compressing files on our computers. This sounds like compressing the scriptures or, as you say, a real watering down.
It is like the students who read the 'Cliff' notes on the classics and not the books themselves.

Porter..gratefully.

I don't know much about software out there, but the idea of using the scriptures from the lectionary for daily bible study and discussion is a very good idea. To simplify things it might be better to start out with the scriptures from the lectionary for Sundays and keep it on that topic for the week. I would hope the discussion could be right here on "Focus on Scripture." I certainly would try to participate if it is.

My nickel, smile

I like the idea of a Bible discussion of the readings also. I agree that it would be great if this happened right here on the Scripture forum.
Adding my own 2 cents,
Michele

Fr Anthony,

Can we pose this in the form of a question on one of the other forums. I know that duplicate posting is not desired, especially after the correction given to Fr. Thomas. Would it get anymore attention, or can an announcement be made somehow?

I can see that is may be easier since we are Orthodox and Catholic if we follow the Lectionary and see where it leads us. We all know what does not hit us, so to speak one week, smacks someone else right between the eyes. So what they gain from the Word, homily, and Eucharist is food for us all. So much of the time we take what we hear home and never share it, it still grows in us, but God says faith comes by hearing. So when we espouse those thoughts to others then we are once again hearing those words and our faith grows.

Also, maybe at the top of this forum we could link different versions of the Bible. Different words always give us more understanding - you know variety is the spice of life eek - so by having the Word available before us online, we can quickly check to see what the difference maybe.

Also, if we are going to do this, I guess we could even pm folks and make them aware of it, if that is permissable.

Pani Rose,

I would suggest as not to duplicate this thread, but to place a request in Town Hall for those that would be interested in a bible study as suggested by yourself and Porter. Ask them to post as a reply to that thread that simply they would be interested in participating, and if enough interest is exhibited in the proposal, then it can be taken up by the moderators and administrators.

I hope and pray that this will stay within the decorum of posting. Any other posters to this idea should then search out the proposal thread after it up, and post their thoughts to the proposal.

I hope this helps,
Father Anthony+
