Our Church published a book, "The Old Testament: A Byzantine Perspective," back in 1994. It was written by one of our priests and was "... reviewed and approved by all the hierarchs of the thirteen participating dioceses, ... It therefore represents their communities' common faith and vision." (from the page prior to the TOC, ... err, the Table of Contents).

There are six chapters:
1. Genesis.
2. Passover and Covenant.
3. The Prophets.
4. Messianic Prophecy and Apocalyptic.
5. Wisdom For Life.
6. The Psalms in the Life of the Church.

Also included is a Glossary of OT terms and 233 informative footnotes for the more studious.

My pastor used this text for our adult ECF and it was well received, especially those discussion-starter footnotes! I highly recommend it for your Bible studies library, especially since our Church has given attention to the importance of the Old Testament. Rumor has it that there will be a text on the New Testament too.

Has anyone used this text for their adult or high school ECF classes or for personal study?

Joe

Mor Ephrem,

To order from God With Us Publications, check out this web-page.

The book I mention will be found on page 6 of their catalog.

This book was written by one of the priests of the Ruthenian Eparchy of Passaic, Fr. Jack Custer, who also is the Academic Dean at SS Cyril & Methodius Seminary, Pittsburgh, PA.

Not a rumor, Joe. Fr Jack was working on his manuscript when we were there during the summer.

John,

I know. But I can't be definite until I get publication data. wink

Have you had the opportunity to read or use the Old Testament book for ECF?

Joe,

We actually used the book for Old Testment I as part of the diaconal formation. I have not used the book per se in ECF, though I have used the text in explaining the use of the OT during the Great Fast and Great Vespers, esp, of Pascha.

John,

I guess I missed the first two years of deacon training to know that.
