Please remember +Msgr. John Kurty in your prayers whom the Lord has called to Himself. The details from the Parma Chancery have not yet been released. As of this message (on Sunday evening) it sounds like a Thursday funeral at St. Stephen's, in Allen Park, MI. Please wait for official notification with more details.

Msgr. (then Father) Kurty was the pastor at St. Mary's church in Johnstown during my infant years there.

I remember that he liked some room to maneuver in delivering his sermons: he had the habit of removing his phelonion and leaving it on the altar before making his way to the lectern. He would carry newborns over his head into the sanctuary and around the altar after their christening. Although we had a private-style confessional, in counseling his parishioners there, he would address them by name. He called my parents Stevie and Jeannie, like a couple of kids - which I suppose they were.

I remember that he would bring out lollipops for us little kids after the Sunday liturgy. And that he would sometimes spend Sunday afternoons at the homes of parishioners for dinner and fellowship. I clearly remember the Sunday he spent with my family. In his spare time in Western PA, he liked to go deer-hunting and enjoyed an occasional pinch of Mail-Pouch.

He was a rugged charismatic man and a generous priest who loved his people. The memory of him and his days at St. Mary's have always been treasured with great fondness and with highest esteem.

Eternal memory!

Bishop +John and Fr. Kachuba are flying to Detroit tommorrow from Kansas City. As I recall Kyr +John mentioned this afternoon after the pontifical Divine Liturgy that Msgr. will be buried in his family's plot in Pennsylvania after the funeral services in Detroit.

May the Lord grant peace and blessed repose to His priestly servant. May the people whom he served find comfort and peace in the full faith of Our Lord's promise to bring His servants to a heavenly mansion because of their faith in Him and their service.
