Dear brothers and sisters,

Sorry I haven't been around much lately.

Anyway, I am in desparate need of prayer right now. A personal tragedy is in the process of unfolding, and I'm still not sure how it's going to turn out. I can't work; I can barely function.

Please just offer up a short prayer for me to our merciful Savior and the most holy Theotokos.

Dear LT,

You've got a full Rosary from me right now for your intentions, Big Guy.

Just as long as you know it is being prayed in Ukrainian, not in Latin, if that is all right.

On Friday night, I was in a snow-storm so terrible, I couldn't see the road ahead of me and the ice pellets where coming at us like daggers.

There were accidents all around us.

But somehow we got through.

And remember that there is a prayer one should immediately say when one is suffering:

O God come to my assistance! O Lord make haste to help me!

Say it over and over again until the Peace of God reigns in your heart.

And then continue to say it.

Pax Vobiscum, Latine Traditione!

Alexandrus Romanus

LT,
Believe it or not, I love St. Philomena. My wife and I named one of our daughters (middle name) after her. I know she's not kosher in Eastern Circles (or even in the VatII Church) but I love her and I know she intercedes for us. Maybe it's because she is such an underdog, so invisible to the world, and has been given no respect. I don't know, but I will invoke her intercession for you and I humbly suggest you do the same until you can tell she is with you (which in my experience has never taken very long).
Prayers and blessings Latin Hammer.

Thanks, Ken!! St. Philomena is a huge patron for me!! I started a novena to her this morning for this intention, and (incidentally) I am under a vow, for previous blessings received, to make a pilgrimage to her shrine and make an offering there some time before my death.

When I was a freshman in college, it looked like I wouldn't have the funds to continue, and I prayed St. Philomena, and she got me through!

Sancta Filumena, o.p.n.!!

LT:

A couple Byzantine verses that I use when it seems that i cannot function:

God is with us, understand this . . . and submit yourself, for God is with us.

Through the prayers of the Mother of God, O Savior, save us.

You and the rest of our brethren here remain in my prayers.

May the Lord in His rich mercy heal you in whatever situation He sees you in and in need.

In Christ,

BOB

Ken:
Saint Philomena was a great friend/benefactor of the Cure of Ars, Saint John Vianney, and since that is so, it does not appear this saint to be 'out of the question' for anyone ... if she was 'kosher' enough for the Cure of Ars, and probably many others, I don't see what the problem is.
Also, if LT knows a lot about her: LT -- it is in my mind that for some reason November 9th was a date on which some evidence regarding her authenticity appeared somewhere - it is a rather hazy memory - something I heard a priest say at a Mass a few years ago - I don't know if this rings a bell....
I have to admit I hadn't thought of her myself. Nice to be reminded of her again.

Dear Ken,

Why do you assume St Philomena isn't kosher in Eastern circles?

She has been in our calendar for centuries!

It was you Latins that screwed up her cult by not checking which bones you were putting into her shrine.

And ever since then Latins think she was a "saint by mistake."

No, no, no!

She was a true Martyr for Christ. Can we Easterners help it if you Latins didn't know what you were doing with her shrine?

As for the Cure mentioned by C of S, there was a "religious joke" that he was the patron of "useless cases."

After all, he spent half of his life praying to St Philomena and the other half confessing children . . . (O.K., it's a bad joke - an Irish priest told me that one).

But the crisis with St Philomena was one that you Latins will have to wear.

We continue to honour her in the East.

Alex

Lord grant that the tragedy be averted.

If Your will is otherwise, ay LT be given the the strength and courage and love to deal with the impending tragedy. May his heart rest secure in your care and his worries pass to your mercy.
