Dear Friends,
The epidemic of SARS continues to inspire fear in the hearts of people in the Toronto area.
People are staying away from restaurants et alia and this is costing millions of dollars in lost revenue, hurting the economy and so on.
The Roman Catholic Archdiocese has recently come out with new guidelines pertaining to SARS:
Crucifixes will not be kissed this Easter. The Chalice will not be shared. And Communion will ONLY be given in the hand.
A Catholic prayer-group of about 300 people was recently exposed to SARS and fifty of these are now in quarantine.
Please pray for us, especially to St Roch of Montpellier, the Patron against pestilence-type diseases!
Alex

Dear Alex, I will indeed pray for all affected by this tragedy. It is ironic, the moment you were posting your prayer request, I was asking about the impact of SARS in another thread (Byzantine News). Check out the time index, they are only seconds off! Great minds think alike?? Nah, [I would never claim to have as great a mind as you, dear Alex ] I suspect the Holy Spirit was at work. Well anyway, Peace on all your house and a glorious Pascha to all!

Dear Benedictine, And to think that someone like me couldn't find a Benedictine monastery that would take him as an Oblate! (I'm a simpleton, really!) Anyway, let's resist the temptation to have an online contest to prove who is more humble! A Happy Easter to you and your entire community! This reminds me of the section in the Lift of Benedict when a priest visits St Benedict as he is fasting and praying in a cave. It was Easter Sunday, but, of course, St Benedict, living as a solitary at the time, would have had no idea that it was. The priest tells him it is Easter and to this Benedict replies, "Since you have come to me, it truly IS Easter!" May we all have such Easters! Alex

Dear Sharon,
Again, you are not here - and thank God for that.

Alex: I don't envy your city these days. Illinois has 15 suspected SARS cases, 6 of which are in the Chicago area. Five of the 6 belong to one household, whose one member arrived recently from Hong Kong. Fortunately, no deaths have been reported, as yet. AmdG

Apropos the topic, the CDC has again provided the good-old stand-by guidance given by grannies over the years: Wash your hands frequently and keep your hands away from your face. (Those old ladies knew what they were talking about!!) Blessings!
May the Lord intervene and allow the demise of this virus; and may His servants be protected from its dangers.

Dear Friends,
Ontario now has 250 SARS cases.
Yesterday at our St Nicholas parish, Communion was given in one Kind only, and in the hand.
The icons were removed and there will be no kissing of the Epitaphion on Holy Friday.
Over the weekend, a nurse working with SARS patients, and who apparently has it herself, exposed others to this disease as she was riding the public transit . . .
Altar boys wore masks during Good Friday services at St Michael's Cathedral . . .
An entire Catholic parish was quarantined . . .
Pray for us!

This is a frightening virus. I am praying for an end to this horrible illness, and for those who have suffered and/or died from it.

CHRISTOS VOSKRES!
We may have our first case of SARS here in Baltimore.
It is a woman who just returned from vacation in Hong Kong.
Holy Father St. Nicholas of Mozhiask, we beg your protection!

Dear Friends,
We now have over 260 cases and suspected cases of SARS and 15 people have died from the disease, a 64-year old man just yesterday.
It is rather strange to see people wearing masks on the public transit system.
Our economy is ailing as well as people stay home and fewer people travel here. Those who are travelling here are being told to stay away from medical facilities while in Toronto . . .
St Roch and St Damien of Molokai are patrons of pestilential diseases, FYI.
Lord have mercy on us!

Dear Alex: Featured last night in all television network news were the police and paramedics of Buffalo, NY, donning surgical gloves and masks for protection against SARS which may "invade" the City from across Toronto! In turn, the U.S. CDC issued officially a travel warning to Hong Kong, China, Singapore, Vietnam, and Canada. The on-going war in Afghanistan and Gulf War II may have failed to widen the "gulf" between our U.S. Republic and your Dominion of Canada, but the "war" against SARS may very well be the beginning of the "great divide" between us, without even a single epithet angrily hurled across Lake Ontario! Dear Amado,
I understand that even our Russian monarchists here are no longer saying, "Long live the Tsars!"
O.K., bad, bad . . .
Perhaps this is all blown out of proportion, but the ripple effects in government (doesn't know what it's doing to respond to SARS), the medical profession (failing to fully protect the public) and the economy (business wants help to weather the downturn of profits) are just now being felt and that keenly.
Stay tuned . . .
Alex
