The Catholic News Service reported the death of Archbishop Denis Hurley, emeritus of Durban, South Africa, on February 13th.

Blessed Repose and eternal Memory!

Quote:
CAPE TOWN, South Africa (CNS) -- Retired Archbishop Denis Hurley of Durban, South Africa, an outspoken opponent of apartheid, died Feb. 13 at age 88. Archbishop Hurley, who died in Durban as he was returning home from attending a religious celebration, "will be remembered for his outstanding contribution to the struggle against apartheid, for his concern for the poor and his commitment to a more just and peaceful society," the Southern African Catholic Bishops' Conference said in a statement. ...

... In 1947, he was named to replace Bishop Henry Delalle of Durban. At 31, he became the youngest bishop in the world. He was made an archbishop five years later, becoming the youngest archbishop at the time.

At the Second Vatican Council, Archbishop Hurley was among 25 members of the agenda-setting Central Preparatory Commission.

He first served as chairman of the Southern African Catholic Bishops' Conference from 1952 to 1961, during which time the conference spoke against apartheid for the first time. In 1957, the conference issued a statement describing the system of enforced racial segregation as "inherently evil."

O Thou Who with wisdom profound order all things with love, and Who gives to all what is needful, O only Creator, give rest, O Lord, to the soul of Thine Archpriest Denis for on Thee he has always set his hope, our Maker and Builder, and our God.

Rejoice, holy Virgin who for the salvation of all didst bear God in the flesh, and through whom mankind has found salvation. Through thee may we find Paradise, O pure, most blessed Mother of God.

Give rest eternal, O Lord, in blessed repose, to the soul of Thy departed Archpriest Denis, and make his memory eternal!

With prayerful sympathy,
+Father Archimandrite Gregory

May the saints who suffered persecution for their work to free those who are in chains of whatever kind intercede for Archbishop Hurley.

May the Lord Who is Head of His Body reward him for his efforts on the part of the disenfranchised ones and the poor ones among our human family.

May Jesus grant to His Church many leaders who like Archbishop Hurley see His face in the poor and marginalized and who work to make His healing felt among them.
