Dear Paul,

As I understand it, it is a title of honour for hierarchs in the Oriental Churches.

It can also replace "Saint" when referring to any Saint in the Oriental tradition.

I believe it means "Lord" (in the non-divine sense, akin to "Kyr" in Greek/Slavonic parlance).

Bishops in various Syriac traditions are called "Mar so-and-so" and, as Alex pointed out, it can be for saints (although I believe this is often the "popular" way of referring to saints).

I believe you're right, Dave (Chtec). I recall hearing St. Maron being referred to as "Mar Maroun."

Dear Friends,

Yes, that same word, in our own tradition, means to "soil" as in someone's reputation . . .

Yet it also means "sea" or "ocean" in other languages. Stella Maris (Star of the Sea) is a well-known title for the Blessed Mother.

Dear Amado,

No.

Actually, "married" referred to the practice to sing the "Hail Mary" at weddings in the West.

After this was sung, the service ended and one was "married" which became synonymous with "wedded."

Shlomo Lkhoolkhoon,
"Mar" means lord in Aramaic (of which Syriac and Assyrian are dialects).
