I've written (and am still tweaking, so be kind!) an essay about my experiences with and impressions of the Byzantine Catholic Church and thought you might enjoy it.

If you notice any facts I've gotten wrong, please, please, please let me know - thanks! If you notice any opinions I've gotten wrong, well, that's just par for the course with Theist Gal. wink

Dear Theist Gal,
Well done. A question for you: does Sherman Oaks = Van Nuys? I've never been to Cally, so please pardon my ignorance.

Unfortunately, some of these exiles have brought their anger with them, and have tried to "Latinize" the Eastern Rite parishes they join. They have replaced icons with statues, erected the Stations of the Cross, installed holy water fonts and kneelers, and insisted on other devotions and prayers, all of which are perfectly legitimate and right in the Latin Rite, but completely out of place in the Eastern Churches.
I don't know of any instances where any RC "exiles" have successfully introduced statues, Stations, etc. in a Byzantine Catholic parish church. The phenomenon of RC "exiles" in our churches is something that mainly happened in the 1980s and 1990s, whereas statues, Stations, etc. predate that by at least four decades.

Where these things exist in a Byzantine Catholic church, they were generally installed before or during our Church's "Americanization" period of the 1940s-1960s when our largely Eastern European, Slav (mainly Rusyn) immigrant-based churches were trying to adapt to what was perceived as the mainstream American Catholic way of worship & spiritual life, and that meant to do "what the Catholics do". This was also the period of founding Byzantine/Greek Catholic sodalities, Holy Name Societies, and such.

In short, the "latinizations" that you have either seen or been told about are mostly home-grown and introduced by Byzantine Catholics themselves (primarily by the clergy but enthusiastically adopted or at least accepted by most of the laypeople).

Well, that was based on posts that I have read here and at other Byzantine/Orthodox sites, making essentially that very complaint. If I'm wrong, I'll change it, but I'm just going by what I've read.

Thanks for your comments! smile

Great essay! I laughed when I read the line about God's sense of humor. I have been on the receiving end of His Holy and Infinate Humor so many times that I usually just look up now and then and ask "Okay...are we done laughing now...". And yes, He does draw straight with crooked lines, which is how I and my family also ended up in the Byzantine Church.

Thanks!! (And by the way, what a beautiful name you are using! Wasn't there a movie with that title, The Lady and the Hawk, something medieval?)
