So what say anyone regarding kissing cousins? Under the moonlight, under the bedsheets, out of the cloths. Is this immoral? Should first cousins marry? Anyone got a female cousin they were attracted to as a teenager? What about you Mor? I know there must have been a few girl cousins wraped in that Indian cloth that could have looked eatable from time to time - no?

Recent studies show that there are less birth defects for cousin couples than previously thought.
In India, cousin marriage is one thing that can help a family stay middle class (doing a fair trade of cousins will keep the dowry basically in the same hands).
I don't think it's immoral; it just is not normal in our culture.

Hi,
Is there anyone out there who can confirm this. Friends told us that in the Serbian Orthodox Church you have to marry 7 relations away. Two sisters from one family could not marry two brothers from another. One pair broke off the relationship. The other was allowed to marry. If this is true does it extend to other Orthodox Churches? Was it BC tradition at one time?

Well, to be honest, while I have attractive female relations, those that fit the bill were like sisters to me more than cousins, so no, they didn't look "eatable" to me. But take any good looking girl, throw her in a sari, and that's it, anyone would be hooked, myself included.

Maybe I'm obtuse, but I don't quite understand the objective of this thread.
From a biological perspective, there are serious reasons for not becoming involved with a first cousin. (It has to do with genetic diversity.)
As for attraction, it seems to me that no one has ever been able to come up with a serious paradigm for falling in love. Scary.

Christ is Risen from the dead!!! Dr. John, Supposedly the word is now that relations with first cousins poses no such great health risk to child so as to ban the legality of it's marriage. And supposedly unlike America, a large part of certain areas of the world frequently have marriage between first cousins. I believe I read somewhere that in some place up to 60% of the marriages are between first cousins. I'm not sure what the Western or the Eastern Church says on this matter???? As I've never had the inclination to marry one of my cousins it was never a rule I felt the need to look into. However I will admit to seeing a first cousin for the first time as an adult after last having saw her years way back as a child, and thinking to myself that I would hit that.... well you get the point. Actually I find the topic a bit humorous, pluse although it doesn't come out across on the computer in these forums, I'm a bit of a romantic. So it makes for light hearted talk. Abdur, no need for you to hide away feel free to add to the discussion. You Muslims can have several wives so I'm sure you all have some rather *adventureous* sexual relations going on in your neck of the woods (Islamic world that is).

The current legislation for Eastern Catholics recognizes the state of first cousins an obstacle to marriage - dispensaple, however, if a reason to grant such dispensation exists. BTW, one may even marry his auntie (her uncle), if there is a serious reason... Sincerely, Reader Peter

Maximos notes above: "And supposedly unlike America, a large part of certain areas of the world frequently have marriage between first cousins. I believe I read somewhere that in some place up to 60% of the marriages are between first cousins."
I seriously doubt this. But if it's true, I guess that's why there are so many third world nations around.
With the writer's proposition to the neo-Islamic Abdur, I get the suspicion that we are being flamed. Am I wrong?
If not, then I must consider: with all the millions of the people in the world, why would one be constrained to "discover" a first cousin? Must be a serious personality issue.

I think I read the same article Maximus did (if I'm not mistaken, it was reported on the BBC website...it was when I was on that that I remember reading this), in which case, the 60% number is true, and the region in question is the Middle East. Hardly a third world area...just ask my uncle, who lived there for years. Which brings me to my question: How does marriage between first cousins end up in an abundance of third world countries? Must've missed that equation...

Dr. John:
Are you sure that that comment was in your usual Christian tone? I think you are saying that cousin marriage would make the genes bad, hence leading to less educated populace, but if you take the premise that this is a facet of a society (like in India, where it IS very common), then you sound like a Eurocentrist! (ie those dumb incenstuous natives keep screwin' up their country by marryin their durn cuzins!) ;-)
