I have, perhaps, a silly question BUT:

Why do the people who write the most and in the strongest authoritative terms in these forums make a joke out of their profile?

This gives the reader no feeling as to the credibility of the writer or allow the reader to put the posting in perspective.

What are people hiding who will not respond accurately to the profile questions?

Thank you if you can shed any light on this. It has bugged me for a while now.

Dear Ed,

Speaking strictly for myself, I use the pseudonym of "Moose" for two reasons:

1. I have used my real name and displayed my e-mail address on other forums and have received what can only be described as 'hate mail' from those that disagree with my positions (this has happened on both Roman Catholic and Orthodox sites). From my posting perspective, logic and correct teaching does not necessarily need a name behind it to carry authority. This should be understandable when one realizes that even "Ed Nemeth" and your well done website could actually be totally fictious, having been created merely to create some sort of believability. One would have either know you or pick up the phone and check your credentials to determine if you are what you say you are (expect a visit from Rocky later in your office).

2. I keep my profile humorous to send the message that those of us who participate in on-line forums ought not to take ourselves too seriously. A lot of good discussions have taken place here. But so have a lot of poor discussions that have put us all - Byzantine Catholics, Orthodox and Roman Catholics - in a poor light. The true witness of our faith in Christ is how we live our lives, something that is difficult to communicate on the internet. Besides, I really am Moose. Just ask Rocky. Please keep me in your prayers as hunting season approaches here in Frostbite Falls, Minnesota.

Thanks! This all makes sense! I said that my question might be silly. --- Also, I am not sure which web site to which you refer, but we at St. George have a new web site that is still under construction. Visit us at http://stgeorgemission.org.
