Did anyone ever think of those Greek Catholics who had their liturgy bastardized with Latinizations? As an altar server, I often recalled how the babas and old gentlemen often complained about how our Eastern liturgy was rejected by our clergy and Latin practices enforced without sensitivity. Joe, I understand your point. Anyone who knows me, knows my deep belief in our need to continue to restore our Eastern identity. Our parish has made great strides in this area due primarily to the courageous direction of our pastor. I was only trying to share a perspective as to WHY some of our older parishoners respond the way they do to what they perceive as "change." We have to realize that the "bastardizations" you speak of are to these people the way they have been practicing their faith their entire lives. Let me be clear - The necessity for change is undeniably essential to the survival of our beloved Byzantine Church. I only ask that we keep our discourse as civil as possible. Sometimes, having a clearer perspective as to why someone is upset or angry will help us in maintaining an atmosphere of mutual respect. From my personal experience, debate and discussion carried out in this type of atmosphere is not only more pleasant, but more productive. Ed
