When introducing new musical materials, what works for you, and what doesn't?

Besides changeable propers, many parishes have occasional changes in musical settings for services. How do you approach such changes in your parish? Do you have some sort of rehearsal prior to the service? Do you post a note in the Sunday bulletin advising parishioners of the change? Do you distribute printed copies of new material? How often do you make changes?

Some things work, some don't. Please share your experiences.

I've introduced a fair number of musical settings over the last three years, with varying degrees of success! Two immediate suggestions:

1] Practice until I've got it down cold.
I have arrogantly skipped this a few times, and the parish paid!

2] Repeat, repeat, repeat!
When introducing a new musical setting, I try to seek out opportunities to repeat it. If it is a hymn, I will try to use it before and after liturgy as well as during communion. If it is a setting of one of the common hymns of the Liturgy, I try to use it for a month or so until folks get it down.

The propers are a different situation, that I will address in a later post.

One of the things we have done with some success is to provide new or different musical settings of a particular hymn/tropar etc. on a seperate piece of card stock, that parishioners can pick up on their way in. That way we can add hymns suitable for singing during communion, rather than simply reuse a few hymns ad infinitum. Also, we can change the cherubic hymn setting, etc. with less cause for angst.

The cardstock supplement is in addition to whatever service book is being used, and the corresponding propers. It can be slid into the service book or leaflet. For example, for Vespers, we use musical settings from the Vespers book of the Sisters of St. Basil with a seperate pew booklet, so we copied them onto a piece of cardstock.
