This series is golden, every book. From St. Seraphim of Sarov to St. Paissius Velichkovsky to Abba Nazarius to St. Theodore of Sanaxar, this series is truly wonderful. Available from St. Herman of Alaska Brotherhood.

They also print another excellent series that I'll save for another thread.

Dear Father Deacon,

What is the difference between the "Little Russian Philokalia" and the "Writings from the Philokalia on Prayer of the Heart?"

I have a version of the latter by E. Kadloubovsky and G.E.H. Palmer.

The Little Russian Philokalia series is not actually from the patristic Philokalia compiled and translated from the Greek by St. Paissius from Mt. Athos.

It is a collection of the sayings and lives of the later Russian startsi, most fairly recent (17-19th century). The volume on St. Theodore for example contains his counsels to his spiritual children, and the story of the enthronement of his relics. It also contains his monastic rule for Sanaxar, which is fascinating, and I think a wonderful guide for restoring the authentic monastic heritage of our Church and our own spiritual and liturgical life in parishes, missions, and our families.

The "Writings from the Philokalia" on the other hand is from a different source. It is a collection of selected chapters and sayings from the larger four-volume Philokalia translated into English by Sherrard, Palmer, Bishop Kallistos, et. al.

The Philokalia is another must-have in every Eastern Christian's spiritual library - sort of our spiritual "Magnum Opus" if you will.
