Another book that I find very useful is the Byzantine Daily Worship book, put together by +Most Rev. Joseph Raya of eternal memory and Baron Jose De Vinck. The format utilized concurs with Melkite usage. Below are the contents of this fine book:

2. Byzantine Prayer
3. The Icon
4. The Holy Table
5. Sacred Gestures
The Divine Office

Introduction:
1. Obligation
2. Proper Dispostion
3. Singing
4. Liturgical Books

Horologion
Office of Vespers
The Prayer at the Supper Table
The Order of Compline
Office of Great Compline
The Order of Matins
Office of Lauds

The Canonical Hours:
Office of Prime

Office of None
The Divine Liturgy

The Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom
Liturgy of Preparation
Liturgy of Offering
Liturgy of Holy Communion
Liturgy of Thanksgiving

The Divine Liturgy of St. Basil
Liturgy of Preparation
Liturgy of Offering
Liturgy of Holy Communion
Liturgy of Thanksgiving

The Divine Liturgy of the Presanctified Species
Particularities
Celebration of the Liturgy

Communion Prayers
Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament
Proper of Ordinary Weekdays
Theotokia of the Week
The Liturgical Year

Menaion

Triodion:
The Time Before Lent
The Great and Holy Time of Lent
Great and Holy Week

Pentecostarion:

The only drawback at this time is the book is currently very hard to find.

Michael

This is a classic and still is a wonderful prayer resource. Mine unfortunately is being held up with black tape from years and years of use. Raya was the first Byzantine prayer book I ever owned - and perhaps the first and one of the few prayer books made with the blessing of both Catholic and Orthodox Patriarchs.

Our former local Antiochian priest used Raya for the prayers of light at Vespers and other private prayers of the priest -he said he preferred the print as well as the text (his was as taped up as mine also).

Two things, both very very astounding questions.

First, where can I get a copy of Byzantine Daily Worship? I know it is out of print.

Second, since it is unlikely I will be able to get a copy, would anyone with a copy be interested in typing up or working with me so that I could type up the book? That is, assuming that BDW, like most Melkite resources, has an open-use policy for reproduction for non-financial gains.

Laka, try Icon and Book Service, Light and Life, the Melkites and Madonna House in Canada before completely giving up.

I've been lucky enough to acquire the Hopgood service book from the early 1900's. I'm needling the librarian to delist their copy of Byz Daily Worship too.

Icon and book service -- http://www.iconbook.org/ -- definitely has it. I was there on Wednesday, and I saw it.

Peace,

Are the prayer translations used in Byzantine Daily Worship consistent with those found in the Byzantine Book of Prayer as opposed to current Melkite usage?

For example:

BBP: "Heavenly King, Comforter, Spirit of Truth! You are everywhere present and fill all things. Treasury of Blessings and Giver of Life, come and dwell within us, cleanse us of all stain, and save our souls, O gracious Lord."

Melkite Horologion: "O Heavenly King, Consoler, Spirit of Truth, present in all places and filling all things, the Treasury of blessings and the Giver of life, come and dwell in us, cleanse us of all stain, and save our souls, O Good One."

I would appreciate any input.

BDW follows Melkite Usage. BBP used BDW texts but changed them to fit Ruthenian Usage.
