I have been reading this book the past two days and am interested in peoples opinions of it.

My problem is that when I read books about the Catholic and Orthodox positions, the authors always seem to make good points on both sides of the issue and I'm left scratching my head.

I would like to think the conclusion of this book is wrong (I'm Catholic). What makes you think it is a "hack job", Gordo? What do other people think in terms of its strenghts and weaknesses?

Athanasius,

Respectfully, I have no desire personally to revisit Whelton. (I have not picked up his text in my library for several years.) I mentioned that James Likoudis provides a refutation to Whelton's arguments. I would recommend (for yourself, not our forum) starting there to see the counter point and then landing somewhere in the middle between two extremes. Others will disagree with me, and that is fine.

A much finer work would be the book, The Primacy of Peter , published by SVS. I would be willing to do a group reading of that text and then perhaps read Soloviev on the Papacy.

I'm off to attend DL at Nicholai-do and to pray at the shrine to this great Missionary Saint of Japan! I attended a beautiful Mass yesterday evening at the Franciscan Chapel, and will today experience the worship of the Orthodox cathedral parish. I pray one day that I can choose either to attend when we are united in body and spirit!

And I will light candles for the intentions of all here on the forum.

God bless,

Gordo

What??? And forgo the Holy Handgrenade of Truth???

Quote:
And Saint Attila raised the Holy Hand Grenade up on high saying, "Oh Lord, Bless us this Holy Hand Grenade, and with it smash our enemies to tiny bits."

And the Lord did grin, and the people did feast upon the lambs, and goats, and orangutans, and breakfast cereals, and lima bean- And then the Lord spake, saying:

"First, shalt thou take out the holy pin. Then shalt thou count to three. No more, no less.
*Three* shall be the number of the counting, and the number of the counting shall be three.
*Four* shalt thou not count, and neither count thou two, excepting that thou then goest on to three. Five is RIGHT OUT. Once the number three, being the third number be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade to-wards thy foe, who, being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it. Amen.
