I would have enjoyed hearing Pr. J. Michael Thompson speak on the history of Carpatho-Rusyn chant. I had the pleasure of meeting him about a year ago, and he struck me as professional and personable and with a very good voice. Also, I am just coming to appreciate the Carpatho-Rusyn style of chant. In the Byzantine Catholic parish I attended, the chant was in that style. It was melodic, and it was easy to learn and participate in. Now, I am attending an OCA parish; and the chant is in the Russian style. It is very harmonic, not so much melodic, and it is not as easy to learn and participate in. However, the harmonic quality of the Russian style of chant produces some sounds which I have never heard before, and which are quite interesting and often beautiful. Nevertheless, I am homesick for the Carpatho-Rusyn style because of its beautiful melodies, the ease of learning it and singing it, and the good memories I have associated with it. And it probably would have been a pleasure to hear Pr. Thompson speak on it because he is a scholar of it and a practitioner of it.
