Actually, that piece of music was composed by Dmitry Bortniansky as a melody for Tantum Ergo, Sacramentum.

Actually, that piece of music was composed by Dmitry Bortniansky as a melody for Tantum Ergo, Sacramentum. Any more information on this or references would be appreciated. This version, being a more literal translation than the one in the Levkulic "pew book," may be of interest to some: Kol'_Slaven Dn. Anthony

Haven't got a reference handy at the moment. However, one may note that in Russian Orthodox circles, there is an unwritten ritual taboo against singing "Kol' Slaven" in Church - the reason (which most Russian Orthodox have long since forgotten) is that the music was originally written for Tantum Ergo, Sacramentum. As an aside, the Romanian Orthodox seem to like Kol Slaven--I have three different music books that include the words and music for Cīt de mărit este Domnul īn Sion. However, they've added a lot of eighth notes to Bortniansky's original music (in order to accommodate the extra syllables in the Romanian translation) and they changed the final cadence.
