Bid Launched to Save Woman from Being
Stoned to Death DEC. 20, 2001, Numerous
groups have responded to Amnesty
International´s campaign to save the
life of Safiya Tungar-Tudu, a 33-year-
old Nigerian condemned to death for
having a child outside of wedlock.
According to the Islamic law applied
in some Nigerian states, at the end
of this month the woman will be lowered
into a hole, buried up to her chest,
and then stoned to death by the people
of her village. Tungar-Tudu is confined
to her cabin, where she nurses the
child who has become the cause of
her death sentence.

Organizers of the campaign request
that letters be sent to Nigerian
embassies, appealing to the Nigerian
president to pardon the woman. She
was sentenced to death Oct. 9 by
an Islamic court of the state of
Sokoto.

In this Advent season, we might do
well to consider Safiya's plight in
light of good Saint Joseph's response
to Our Lady's Pregnancy two millenia
years ago:

"Whereupon her husband Joseph, for he
was a right-minded man, and would not
put her to open shame, was for sending
her away in secret"
~St. Matthew 1: 19.

What a sharp contrast to what we see
in our world at the end of 2001! The
greatest and primary way to venerate
God's Saints is to emulate their virtues.
Let us emulate Saint Joseph's right-
mindedness!

Islam claims to acknowledge Jesus
as a prophet. Yet, His prophetic
teaching on the stoning of women is
in sharp contrast to the implementation
of "Shariah" as we see happening in
parts of the world:

"Whichever of you is free from sin
shall cast the first stone."
~ St. John 8: 7.

Even the avowed enemies of Jesus
understood His prophecy, for "they
began to go out one by one...till
Jesus was left alone with the woman."

We, the Church, are His Body. We must
also be His Voice.

What makes this outrage particularly gruesome is the fact that most contemporary Muslim nations and communities have homes for unwed mothers. Why this very small group of Muslims insists on adhering to a practice that is a barbaric anachronism is very difficult to comprehend.

Abdur, you are certainly welcome on this forum. Thanks for the perspective of a born (and "born again' in the colloquial sense) Muslim. No offense, but does your perspective perhaps reflect the Sufis more than other parts of the Islamic tradition today?

As you can see, I now have the forum's recent long Rumi quotation as a page on my site. It is so beautiful — a perfect reminder that peace must be sought in the world situation right now. I have no personal animosity towards Afghans (like Rumi) or Muslims in general.

I believe that most Muslims are not inclined toward fundamentalism.

Ironically, Islam likes to emphasize that it is a "natural" religion and predicated on reason. That being the case, what can be more unreasonable than a fundamentalist interpretation of Islam? We know what Rumi's answer to that question would be.

Even the Koranists claim Rumi as a Muslim, while they often continue to condemn Sufism. It is time for them to to consistent. You can't speak out of both sides of your mouth on this issue.

I know for certain that few European Muslims, from Albania to Adrianople, as well as Muslims from the Central Asian republics, have shed one tear over the demise of the Taliban, and certainly Muslim women the world over rejoice in the defeat of this evil and satanic miscarriage of Islam known as Talibanism. May they have no place in the Paradise to come. For those who dig their own grave, their can be no Resurrection to Eternal Bliss.
