This is an alarming possibility considering that Pakistan is now a nuclear nation.

It is amazing that this isn't even being discussed in the mainstream media. I guess Paris Hilton is more interesting. sick

I have been concerned about this for a number of years.

I don't think the question is "could it", but "has it already". Remember, General Musharaff was not elected, he took over the civilian government in a coup - how much more extreme can one get? The man is barely hanging on by a thread by double-talking both the extremists in his country and the financiers in the US.

Here's a pretty detailed article from April that illustrates how serious the situation in Pakistan is becoming http://www.weeklystandard.com/Content/Public/Articles/000/000/013/457rzpvh.asp

Lord have mercy!

I know a priest in Pakistan - a good man - who has many different apostolates for the Christian minority there.

There are good Muslims in Pakistan, but may God keep the Christian's safe from radical Islam!

Michael Thoma, you took the words out of my mouth!

By all means free Pakistan from Islamists, but also from secular generals...

although as a fan of the victorious underdog I must say that Islamism has done wonders for their cricket..

Early this morning the Pakistani army stormed the Red Mosque in Islamabad and captured it from Islamic radicals who were occupying it. The radical's leader and at least 50 of his followers were killed in the attack. Reaction so far seems to be very mixed, with people in Pakistan both applauding and condemning President Musharraf's decision to storm the Mosque.

The political fallout from this standoff should be very interesting in the days to come, but for the time being we know the Pakistani army is loyal to President Musharraf, and they're too strong for the Islamic radicals in the country.
