President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda, on his 21st year as head of State and government, issued an unprecedented official invitation to Pope Benedict XVI to visit his African country of 28 million.
A born-again Christian himself, Pres. Museveni leads a predominantly Christian nation (85.1%) despite memories of Idi Amin who favoured Islam during his turbulent regime.
A former British colony, the Catholic Church surprisingly has the largest number of faithful (approximately 42%), followed by the Anglican Church of Uganda (approximately 36%). Islam comes third represented by at least 12% of the population. (The CIA factbook estimates Muslims at approximately 16% of the total population.) The remaining percentage of the total population covers traditional tribal religions, Judaism, Hinduism, and other Protetant sects.
No word yet whether the Pope has accepted the official invitation. Interesting times in sub-Saharan Africa!
