Not on the ethnic food circuit here but have good memories of Antiochean church sale baked goods (provided by someone I worked with a few years ago). Also have a friend who has promised to teach me to make pistachio baklava.

Please don't make the same mistake Dr Eric did last year at the Greek Festival by where he lived and drink the Ouzo straight! sick whistle biggrin He had to wear a bag on his head after that.

Anyone make it to the first annual Dormition Pilgrimage at St. Elias? ( http://www.saintelias.com/ca/index.php# and click on "Special Dormition Schedule") I unfortunately had to teach Monday evening but would have loved to hear Hiermonk Taras, and what a blessing to have the church open all night for the vigil.

I made it out to St. Elias for Matins and Liturgy today.

What a tremendous experience! Beautiful Liturgy and church.

I've been down to the Ukrainian Festival in Toronto and I'm heading out again right now. Great food and music there.

Festival season is the best.

They make housecalls with ouzo? Who knew?

I'm planning on having an appropriate amount of fun at Greekfest with my Greek Orthodox friend and her Baptist sister.

Nan,

The last time I wrote that I thought that OYZO was unpalatable, various Greek members of the Forum were calling for my head! shocked wink

Now, just because I don't like ouzo, doesn't mean I don't like other many wonderful Greek foods, like souvlaki, avgolemeno soup, tzatziki, etc...

No patsa either, please!

Dr. Eric,

I've heard of souvlaki and ouzo but not the rest of the foods on your list. But I'm not Greek, so why would I have?

BEWARE of Greeks making Ouzo house calls! Those spirits they are bringing to the door are probably not holy. wink

Isn't the definition of Ouzo "Greek fire water?"

Ouzo is merely Greek koolaid. Real Greeks drink Cretan raki! I can still feel it now!

Actually, that's just Crete. Real mainland mountain men drink Tsipouro!

All right, now you're just killing me. It's September 12 and I just found out the festival was this past weekend! One of my wife's brothers lives in on the border of Fairfax and Annandale--which is very close to the church. We've driven by it many times but I have not had the chance to attend Divine Liturgy there yet. We were talking about driving down to see him one of these fine late summer weekends since we haven't seen him since spring--and NOW I find out the festival was three days ago???!!!!

Just stick a knife in my heart and twist it. Better yet, use a dull butter knife and stick it in my back, it will hurt less than missing the festival! My brother in law has attended the festivals for years and simply raves about it. And he didn't tell us about it. We are going to have some serious words tomorrow night, I can tell you that! I better check the confession schedule right now....

Timbo

Timbo,
Glory to Jesus Christ!
So sorry you missed this one.
But please put on your calendar for next year.
It is always the Sunday following Labor Day.
Please visit us for Divine Liturgy anytime. I would be interested in speaking with you.
