Ah, my friend, do you mean, pirohi, pierogi, or varenki? Onions or no onions? Cherries? Throw in pelmeni and piroshki, and one really muddies the water!

We sell cherry pirohi at my parish. Along with lekvar, apple, and apricot. Big sellers!

hmm, no one gets that fancy here. it is usually potato filled. then onions are tossed in a vat of margarine/butter. Now, Mrs.T's pierogies, sour cream and chives, yum. And yes I can make homemade pyrohy. I have to live up to my screen name.

ps. some parishes make awesome nut roll, apricot roll and poppy seed roll here.

Pure Rusyn pirohy uses buckwheat and is called, "tatarcany pirohy", mostly filled with kapusta - sauerkraut.

I have to find the archive on Slovak television, but two years ago, Rusyns made the world's largest pirohy. It was something like 8 1/2 ft. long and 4 ft. wide....I'll look for the link.

You'd need a lot of butter and onions for that one!!!

I've eaten pyrohy as a main food I think my whole life. No comments! What do you do when your great aunt would make a gazillion and give them to you non-stop? I had Mrs. T's at my non-slavic (we'll make slavs out of them yet) orthodox friend's house last night and today I had pyrohy at a covered dish after Liturgy (handmade).
I'm telling you, sour cream and chives Mrs. T's, they are the best.
Well, I think they are my current favourite. Pumpkin pie pyrohy, now that may be interesting. Maybe a pumpkin custard.....
Tis the season.

Or, the thanksgiving meal pyrohy. potatoes stuffing and bits of turkey inside the pyroh and then pour on the chicken gravy.
