Hi, Orthodox Pyrohy here, long time poster, long time reader.
It has recently been brought to my attention that Rusyns are Ukrainians. I guess I'll have to start flying a Ukrainian flag underneath the USA flag now. Know any good online stores selling good quality (with decent shipping charges) Ukrainian flags?

Try EBAY - search under "Ukrainian flag". We found some very nice ones.

OP,

This site has the new Rusyn flag, it even shows a Lemko flag as well as a discription on all Slavs.

Alexandr,

I think he meant this one... The Austrians were way nicer to the Ukrainians.

Oh, I agree that the Austrians were nice people, and I am quite fond of the Hapsburg Dynasty. Now the Hungarian side of that coin...... I have a very nice book in Ukrainian about the atrocities committed against the Slavs in Carpatho Russia and the Ukraine by the Magyars. I will have to dig it up and give you the title.

Rusyn31:

I sure hope so. Some of the back and forth about this subject on this forum in earlier posts have come close to starting a "Hatfields and Mccoys" situation. wink laugh

No, I heard the Rusyn identity was created by Ukrainian Immigrants to distance themselves from other Ukrainian immigrants that they no longer considered countrymen (ok, countrypeople).
Or that it was a Hungarian campaign to call the Ukrainian from the hills "Rusyns." As the word Rusyn in Hungarian means "one who lacks hungarianism."

Let's not forget what the Hungarians did to the Croats and Romanians. Once a Hun, always a Hun...

Whatever the case may be, I think Ruthenian is a very broad, all-encompassing term. When Lubomyr, Cardinal Husar (Major Archbishop of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church) was here in Philadelphia in September he made the following statement in his sermon:

Quote:
“I come to you with a sincere Ruthenian heart, wishing true good for our church and people.”

Ruthenian is of Latin origin, not an indigenous label. It was once assigned to modern-day Ukrainians, Belarusyns and Carpatho-Rusyns. It's also seen by Orthodox as a specifically Greek Catholic term.

One of the the reasons Rusyn activists have agreed on that "Rusyn" label is that unlike Ruthenian, it's not a Catholic term, and unlike Carpatho-Russian, it's not an Orthodox term.

In that case, all Slavs are Ukrainians, right?
