Benedict XVI: Believers Shouldn't Die Alone
Reiterates Condemnation of All Forms of Euthanasia

VATICAN CITY, FEB. 25, 2008 (Zenit.org).- It's the duty of Christians to accompany those who are dying, and no believer should die alone, says Benedict XVI.

Glory to Jesus Christ!
Glory forever!

This message is long overdue.

I hope hospitals change their policies.
When a person is dying, relatives should be called before the person dies, not after the death has already occurred.

My father died all alone in his room because the nurse didn't want to invade his privacy. I was not even told in time to get there even though the nurse knew that he was dying and could have given me enough notice to be there with him. Unfortunately, the nurse was protestant and does not share our beliefs.

I fear this, especially for when it is my turn to be in that situation. At that time we may be many years into the experiment of a single-payer medical industry. I don't expect medical ethics to improve when government has monopoly not only of the funding but the policies too, which tend to be inflexible during moments of personal crisis.

Some people do seem to prefer privacy when they pass, and this is evident when there are people present and yet it seems the person holds on and waits until everyone turns away or runs down the hall a quick second before dying.
But, admittedly, at least the person has the option, whereas being completely alone denies the person that option.

Elizabeth Maria, I'm sorry your family was denied the chance to be with your father. I can only pray that, first,I have a loved one and that they are be by my side when I die.
