I'm taking a Modern Catholic Thought class at my University and tomorrow we are discussing John Paul II's Ecclesia de Eucharistia. One of the question deals with Eucharistic Adoration. While I know that it is not a tradition for us in the East I was wondering if there was a specific reason besides the fact that we used leavened bread as opposed to unleavened bread. My professor knows that I am Eastern Catholic and I think he might ask me why we don't celebrate Eucharistic Adoration and I want to be able to give a good response other than "well we would have a hard time putting it into the monstrance."

I'm just giving my opinion here.

I suppose the answer is that the Body and Blood of Christ is given with the command "Take. Eat....Drink this all of you..."

Nowhere is adoration mentioned in that command.

Secondly, 'Eucharistic adoration' is a western tradition.

It would be like asking why the Orthodox/Eastern tradition doesn't have the Stations of the Cross, or why we don't say the Rosary.

The answer is 'because we never have, and see no reason to!'

Orthodox Christians certainly pray in Church toward the Tabernacle (which, I might add, is still on the altar. Ask him why THAT has been moved!).

That answer may not satisfy a professor, especially the kind we likely face today, but it is the truth.

I wouldn't say that, as back in the days of Latinization ('50's,'60's,'70's) many Greek Catholic priests used Monstrances
with the Eastern(square)Eucharist placed inside. Trust me, I lived throught it!

The Holy Gifts when not being consumed at Liturgy are hidden as befits the great and awesome Mystery. I would not however say we do not practice Eucharistic Adoration, I think we just do it differently than the Latins. There are the Canon and Prayers of Preparation for Holy Communion and Prayers of Thanksgiving after Holy Communion, the following are from the Jordanville Prayerbook:

CANON OF PREPARATION FOR HOLY COMMUNION

Heavenly King... Trisagion: All-holy Trinity... Our Father... Lord have mercy (12 times). O come let us worship... (Thrice). Psalm 50:


Song 1. Tone 2.

Prayer
of St. Symeon the Translator
O only pure and sinless Lord, Who through the ineffable compassion of Thy love for men didst assume our whole nature through the pure and virgin blood of her who supernaturally conceived Thee by the coming of the Divine Spirit and by the will of the Eternal Father; O Christ Jesus, Wisdom and Peace and Power of God, Who in Thy assumption of our nature didst suffer Thy life-giving and saving Passion - the Cross, the Nails, the Spear, and Death - mortify all the deadly passions of my body. I believe the simplest answer is need, the East has never had an Eucharistic heresy, while to this day many westerners simply do not believe.

There is some Byzantine theological groundwork for adoration of the Sacrament, though it is not necessarily the same as the rite of benediction. Here's a quote that, in turn, cites a number of Eastern Fathers.

There is actually a Melkite Rite of Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament, though this may be a hangover of past latinizations.

There is actually a Byzantine "benediction" of the Divine Mystery at every Divine Liturgy....that's when the priest blesses the people with the covered chalice before he carries over to the side altar (that's not the right name...please help me with the right name...my brain's all fuzzy for being up so late...).

I am aware of that service being in the back of Byzantine Daily Worship... I am unaware of ANY Melkite parish using it in the past 2 decades (if not longer!)...

Irish Melkite can doubtless confirm this... That is definately a holdover from days of yore... (Interestingly it is different from the Ruthenian version, as I recall... The Ruthenian version also being rather hard to come by these days.)

This appears in Byzantine Daily Worship, but is indeed a leftover praxis from the days of latinization and I have not seen it served in four decades of worshipping as a Melkite. I looked at the photo accompanying the blog entry but cannot make out the presbyter's face sufficiently to name him as a Melkite priest of our Eparchy, present or past, if that is indeed the case. Perhaps Father Serge might have better luck.

My thanks for an invitation which has turned out to be quite amusing.

The photograph involves neither Melkite clergy nor a Melkite Church.

The picture is taken towards the end of the Divine Liturgy, and shows the moment immediately before the transference of the Holy Gifts to the Prothesis Table (where the Deacon will consume the Holy Gifts).

The site of the picture is Saint Demetrius Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church, Etobicoke, Toronto.

The clergy are Father Taras Lozynsky, then assistant priest at Saint Demetrius, now at Good Shepherd parish, and Father (then Father Deacon) Richard Hladio, now serving in the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada.

Eastern Fathers clearly insist on reverence paid, not merely to the Body and Blood, but to the chalice, spoon, etc. Indeed, this is one of the reasons given for us to kiss a priest's hand, along with respect for his office.

So...why did not a parallel Rite of Benediction with the Sacrament (or Eucharistic Adoration) develop in the East (naturally, that is)? (Mykhayl may have given the answer? Or perhaps because the Great Entrance served this function for the laity, albeit wrongly. I can't describe how many pious folks seem to think the elements are consecrated by that point!)

The last time I saw either a Melkite Benediction or a Slavic Supplikatsia were both back in the 70s and I have not seen one since (interestingly both offered by Basilians). BDW, several Ruthenian books and the Ukrainian Molitvosvlov kept the order after it had fallen away from common use, perhaps under the influence of older clergy who were directing the printing, although it had long cease to be used.

I believe Eucharistic Adoration is a particular liturgical genius of the Latin tradition and I very much am edified by in in a Latin church. That being said it is most definitely not a Greek Catholic tradition, and when it was used was a direct imitation of a Latin practice or under Latin influence to do so. Like Vespers and other services which sometimes bring our Latin brethren to our churches, Adoration is conversely a point of meeting and appreciation of Latin particular spirituality and devotion.

The questioning of the Real Presence did not become an issue in the East; in the West it arose quite often and virulently after the Reformation. So historically a public veneration and affirmation of the Real Presence became the main impetus for Eucharistic Adoration.

That thought has made me laugh before, since if we followed the same thing in the Latin Rite (of the Catholic Church) we'd be kissing the hand of every Extraordinary Eucharistic Minister we came across. To me it really highlights how unfortunate it was to break centuries of tradition in our own Church, which of course until the reforms only allowed for Priests to distribute Communion. Anyway, it's a funny visual, kissing hands right and left.
