Wow I can't believe we let such ignorant people on TV. Yes, I know she is a comedian but she isn't joking about this. She is just being an idiot. I love how they all just brush Elizabeth Hasselbeck off when she says that she believes that they are deeply into their faith and offers the example of Mother Theresa.

Well Elizabeth in the saint biggrin That our God has graced her in all her beauty to be as humble as she is and to sit there defending the faith in the midst of their many sladerous insults. God have mercy on Joy for she is Catholic. That is how she got on TV - she downs the Church. grrrr

Elizabeth is an ex-Catholic. She is now some type of protestant.

Any student studying rhetoric and logical fallacies would do well to wathc The View. In the course of two hours you could see some text book examples of logical fallacies and convoluted thinking unmatched anywhere else.

If I were king of the world, every grade school student would leave 8th grade having studied rhetoric and memorized a comprehensive list of Logical Fallacies allowing them to call out bologna when they see it.

Forgive me for saying this, but Joy Behar is one of the few people that I really cannot tolerate...I have seen her expressions whenever guests speak about faith--

I find her name ironic because I find no joy in listening to anything she ever has to say. Perhaps I shouldn't place all of the blame on her. Whoopie was just as bad.

A Philosophy professor once said to our class about television:
Quote:
junk goes in, junk comes out
.

I rarely watch anything but EWTN or PBS on tv. God protect us from the horrible influence of the media. Holy Mother of God, pray for us!

I have (female) students who think that the kind of illogical emoting on _The View_ and _Oprah Winfrey_ constitutes persuasive argument. Trying to teach them logic or the need for evidence is answered with, "That's just your opinion. You aren't respecting my opinions."

I hear that all the time... Emotion IS logic to some.

Understanding the difference between making a decision and giving a reason for that decision is something that is ellusive to a lot of folks.

"Why did you choose to do X?"

"Because that is what I decided to do."

"I know you decided to do X, but why did you decide to do X instead of Y?"

"Because I thought it through and chose to do X - it was the decision I came to."

"I realize that, but why?"

"Because it seemed like a good decision."

"OK, what made that decision seem good? What were the pros for doing X rather than Y or Z?"

"I told you - Cause that is just what I decided!"

And these are adults who are rasing children with whom I am dealing.

I think if I were a feminist I'd be quite offended at the View since that show just seems to reinforce the stereotype that women are dingbats. The sad thing is that these women on the show probably do think of themselves as feminists. How sad and pathetic.

Joe, that's just your view. The ladies of the View have their own view, and those views are based on sound opinion, the right of every person in the USA.

Of course, you know what they say about opinions....

I'm disappointed that I wasn't able to use the word "view" a few more times. Sorry about that.

Their views are based on sound opinion? They are based on strong opinions, but not every strong opinion is sound. Their view on saints is based on unsound opinion. I don't think the soundness can easily be defended.

The View has quite a cult following among some of the students at my university, mostly because the Critical Thinking professor on campus rips the show to threads. Therefore if you don't want to have "class" that day, make sure you watch the view before you go and bring up a "relevant" subject while in class and watch as the prof. goes on a forty-five minute rant about the post-intellectual state of the US today and so on and so forth........................ grinI love college.

Just for clarification, I do not do this, however I must confess I enjoy listening the rants when my classmates do.

Today I am planning on going on a 45 minute rant concerning Oprah and her "spirituality." I wonder how many students I will offend.

By the way, Snoop Dog is going to be on the view this Thursday. I confess I'm tempted to watch.

I don't knw why students think that they're "not getting class" in a critical thinking class, when they raise a topic relevant to critical thinking and the professor explains how to think critically about it.

They do this to me all the time in writing class. I'm trying to help a student with a research paper topic--as an example to all the students of how to formulate a topic, how to do research, how to think critically, or whatever--and they accuse me of going "off topic," because I'm not standing there lecturing them about comma splices or whatever they think and ENglish teacher "should" be doing.

It's not that we're "not" getting class, it's more or less we are not having to use that atrocious textbook that cost us an arm and leg. It's also amusing to see our normally nonchalant professor become animated and passionate.
