Hello all!

I mostly lurk here, and do not post because I am not yet on the same intellectual plane as everyone else. :p Anyways, I will be in Jacksonville, FL on May 16-20. Are there any good Eastern Catholic parishes in the area? I am technically a Latin Catholic, but I have been attending a Maronite parish for about 8 months now. I don't think there is a Maronite parish or mission in Jacksonville.

I am, however, willing and eager to see the DL in the Byzantine Church. Are there any in the area that the fine members of ByzCath would recommend? Thanks and God bless!

Andrew,
What you saying? After a millennium of the same old same old a fresh outlook is welcome. Don let the old boy’s club intimidate you, hiding behind their intellectual platitudes. That is how the sheep are kept praying, paying and obeying. This is the US of A so speak freely. Be fresh but not fresh.

Andrew,

These are the Oriental Catholic parishes in Jacksonville itself:

St. Ephrem Syriac Catholic Church
4650 Kernan Blvd.
Jacksonville, FL 32224
(904) 998-7800 or (904) 998-7801
Fax: (904) 998-7802
Website
Liturgy
Sunday: 11:00 a.m.; 5:30 p.m. (English)

St. Maron Maronite Catholic Mission
7032 Bowden Road
Jacksonville, FL 32216-5733
(904) 448-0203
Liturgy
Sunday: 11:15 a.m.

At a quick glance, I'd say that any others are minimally 1.5h out of Jacksonville itself - most 3-4 hours.

Many years,

Neil

Shlomo Andrew,

Sometimes the best way to learn is to jump in. No question is every foolish. Each of us learn from the others that way.

On another note, have you read Abun Anthony Salim's Captivated By Your Teaching: A Resource For Adult Maronite Catholics? It is a great resource.

Poosh BaShlomo,
Yuhannon

Yes, I finished reading it a few months ago. My pastor gave me a free copy of it. It's an awesome resource.

Do you know how regularly the Maronite mission in Jacksonville does the Qurbono? I might give them a call this week, or if there is an email address, I can email them as well. I also thought about attending the Syriac Catholic parish. How similar is it to the Maronite Qurbono?

I was hoping to be able to attend a Byzantine Divine Liturgy, but no such luck this time.

How would you feel about attending an Orthodox liturgy in a magnificent temple? I used to attend DL in Jacksonville when I was in training in Brunswick, Ga.

Do try the Syriac Catholic parish - there are less than 10 in the entire USA, so the chance to experience it close to home (so to speak) is worth taking. And let us know how you find it. Their cathedral in Cairo has lovely icons.

Hello all!

I didn't get a chance to visit the Syriac Catholic parish due to time issues. I wish I had because my alternative was St. Augustine's Cathedral (which was alright). I am going down to visit my aunt tomorrow through next Tuesday. She lives in Bradenton, which is about 40 mins. from Tampa. I hope to visit a Byzantine Catholic parish while I'm there.
