To all my fellow Johns (on the new calendar of course), prayers for a blessed nameday!

Happy Nameday to everyone who celebrates their Nameday today, especially to the Bartholomews and Barnabases out there in cyberspace. Today is the Feast of the Holy Apostles Bartholomew and Barnabas (11 / 24 June) on the traditional Church Calendar.

Happily both Old and New Calendarist Orthodox may enjoy fish today on this second day of the Apostles' Fast, the former in honour of the Apostles and the latter in honour of the Baptist. All of you Greek Catholics on the Gregorian Calendar must be very happy indeed that your very long Apostles' Fast this year is finally drawing to an end after about six weeks. God bless you for your ascetic endeavours. Those of us on the Old Calendar will face the same situation in 2010.

By the way, I thought that most Orthodox who have St John the Forerunner as their Patron Saint celebrate their Nameday on 7 / 20 January, the Feast of his Synaxis. But perhaps it is more common in the Greek Catholic Churches for Johns to celebrate their Nameday on the Feast of the Nativity of the Forerunner (24 June / 7 July)?

Yes, I was just told by someone Greek Orthodox today who I wished a happy nameday to, that the Nativity is the Catholic feast day of St. John. Our John's usually celebrate the beheading. Oh well...they can celebrate both can't they?!?

In Christ,
Alice

On behalf of all those named 'John' who hold the Prophet, Forerunner and Baptist as patron I thank you for the greetings!

As to which name day to celebrate I celebrate all six of them! January 7th is the more traditional day for Slavs but somehow August 29th is the that means the most to me, and celebrating all six is appropriate. I am thinking of recommend to the Holy Synod that the except on the 29th of August all name days be days not just of fish and wine but also of steak, no matter what the other fasting rules dictate! biggrin
