Does anyone know where I can get a copy of a CD or DVD of the Divine Liturgy in English which uses Greek tones?

I very much enjoy listening to the Greek tones and have been visiting the Goarch website.

Thank you!

In ICXC,

Fr. Deacon Daniel

I don't know of DVDs (Jack Figel of Eastern Christian publications I believe has some), but can recommend CDs:

For the Divine Liturgy:
The Romeiko Ensemble Divine Liturgy in Tone 1 CD
Byzantine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom by the Greek Byzantine Choir/Lycourgos Angelopoulos

In a few days Capella Romana will be releasing a CD of the Divine Liturgy in English which should be very good.

If you're interested in other Liturgies, I'd recommend:
Romeiko Ensemble's "He Cometh at Midnight" which is Holy Monday Bridgroom Orthros [half English/half Greek]
Monastery of Simonpetra Orthros as well as Paraklesis
Monastery of Vatopedi's Holy Monday Bridegroom Orthros
[the above four are, in my opinion, the best of the many in my collection]

The Boston Byzantine Choir's "Thy Resurrection" and "Thy Passion" are outstanding, and all in English.

You can get all of the above at liturgica.com

CIX!

Fr. Deacon, I have not personally heard this one, but know a couple who have used to learn Byzantine Chant:

I believe this choir belongs to the GOA.

Also St. Anthony's Monastery may have some material.

I don't know of a CD or DVD. However, if you can read music, I would suggest getting "The Divine Liturgy: A Hymnal in Greek and English" prepared by Kevin Lawrence, a choir director in the GOA. In addition to the Divine Liturgy (set to the neo-Byzantine melodies familiar in the GOA), it includes apolytikia and kontakia for all the major feasts and seasons of the liturgical year, some koinonika and megalynaria, and a smattering of other hymns.

Then there's the "Divine Liturgy Hymnal"--aka, "The Green Book"--prepared by the GOA's Department of Religious Education in the 1970s. This was/is a staple in many GOA parishes. It was revolutionary for its time, but the English translations were made to fit the Greek melodies exactly, even if some poetic license needed to be taken. Regardless, it's still a good book to have.

Our Vicar-General and our protopsaltis here in the Melkite Eparchy of Australia and New Zealand have compiled a CD of the Divine Liturgy in English--of course, using the Byzantine tones (and in most cases, tuning).

You can listen to it on line here: http://www.melkites.org/en/m5.htm . You'll have to select "Holy Mass" on the right, and then you'll see the various parts to listen to. Unfortunately they have been numbered incorrectly.

One of our non-English brethren set this up and hasn't yet corrected it.
