A Greek Catholic Deacon and Subdeacon chanted the Gospel and Epistle in Greek at the Pope's Chrism Mass. Scroll down and you will see the Holy Father using a different pastoral Cross staff... that was last used by Blessed JohnXXIII during a Melkite Liturgy in Rome! Scroll almost all the way downYou can see a picture of Blessed John XXIII in Byzantine vestments, papal tiara, and pallium.

Are there any more pictures of Eastern and Western Catholics concelebrating at Masses together? I could use some of these pictures to explain "in communion" to some ignorant Catholics. Seriously, they don't understand what it means! Blessed Pascha!

Collin,

Ask and you shall receive:

You could always share Pope John Paul II's Orientale Lumen:

Folks,

Having Greek Catholic deacons reading the Epistle and the Gospel is not new...it happened often under John Paul II.

In fact, one time there was an Orthodox deacon that read the Gospel at the Mass along side with Patriarch Bartholomelow was there with John Paul II. That was probably 2 or 3 years before John Paul II died.

I happended to catch that on EWTN, and I really enjoyed it. The only irritating thing was that the voice over commentator was translating through about half the chanting.

Photos from the 100 Anniversary Celebration of Bishop Ortynsky's arrival in America. Cardinals Rigali, Bevilacqua, and McCarrick were there, along with the Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Pietro Sambi.

I also remember when Cardinal Egan held a memorial Mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral for the victimes in the World Trade Center, Patriarch Lubomyr and Bishop Basil Losten participated.

Blessed Pascha to All!!!
