After reading St. Seraphim of Sarov by Archimandrite Moore, I've decided to continue reading about saints, and I wonder if anyone can recommend 1- a good book with a genera overview of saints and 2- a book length book about a particular saint. I would like to find out more about St. Irene of Chrysovalantou, but other than that I have no druthers and I'm open to suggestions.

Thanks for your help!

Peace,
Indigo

Ha, I was going to say I liked reading a copy of St. Martin of Tours by Regine Pernoud, but I don't know how it would compare.

Terry, thanks for the suggestion;you're right, St. Seraphim of Sarov is a tough act to follow (ah, so that's why no one dared to respond), but I assume that since he's a saint, there's something I can learn from St. Martin of Tours. I'll check that book out. Again, thanks.

Peace,
Indigo

Indigo,

His life reflected the radical transformation in his soul when he converted. He clashed against the norms of society and the expectations placed on him and he helped convert a large number of pagan Gauls. He girded his loins and responded with courage and passion to the spiritual occasion of his time.

I haven't read it since I was confirmed, but at the time I read his saint story, my soul was moved and I gained a greater respect for the Christian history I was not taught as a Baptist.

Terry

indigo,

I recently read the St. Martin of Tours book mentioned above, and found it quite moving.

Some other saint books I'd recommend:

Life of Antony by St. Athanasius
Perfect Joy of St. Francis by Felix Timmermans
Joan of Arc by Mark Twain
