Some people say the Divine Liturgy is only the renovation of the sacrifice and death of our Lord. What does the Church really teach?

"Renovation" is not the word you are looking for. The sense of
that word is " to repair something to make it look like new".
This has nothing to do with what happens at Liturgy.

Neither is there any word in common use to fit the reality,
since there is in natural life nothing like it. It is unique.

The Liturgy is re-presentation (not a representation) of
the Sacrifice of Calvary. That sacrifice, which is eternally
present to the Father, is made really present to us in time
at the altar.

Thanks, Edmac, for your answer!

In Portuguese we use "renovação" and, according to this dictionary - http://www.thefreedictionary.com/renovation - "renovation" can also be used in English with the same sense. Maybe other word more familiar would be "renewal".

Phillippe,

Those definitions and their synonym "renew" still does not cut it. We are not repairing or improving on the original. Only "re-present" seems to express the true meaning.
