One reason the Roman Church [sometimes] accepts as Grace-filled (valid) the baptism performed by non-Christians is the story of St. Genesius:

Obviously there are exceptions because the Church does not accept as valid baptisms of Jehovah Witnesses and Mormons.

I believe that this would be, at the least, considered a baptism by blood and of desire, by any account.

I wonder if the Church would have accepted this as Baptism. They would have perfomed a Baptism later. This of course did not happen since Genesius was subjected to torture and death immediately and died bravely as a martyr for Christ.

One other point... the Roman Church does not accept Baptisms performed by non-Christians unless that person has the intention of doing what the Church does. In this case, Genesius' "baptizers" were full of blasphemy and scorn for Baptism and what it meant.
