Granted I am no expert on Turkish law, but their criticism seem somewhat...wrong. And as far as I know, the Pan Orthodox Synod is not a court sitting in judgement on the Patriarch....

Dear me...

Since Turkey loudly claims to be a secular society, it is no business whatever of the government - let alone the "Santa Claus Foundation" - what religious courts function, so long as the religious courts confine themselves to the adherents and tenets of their particular religion and do NOT expect the civil authority to enforce the decisions of the religious courts.

Please bear in mind; Turkey is demanding admission to the European Union, in which there is real freedom of religion. Most Europeans neither know nor care what Mohammedan religious courts function in European countries, so long as they do not interfere with the rights of others.
