Does it have to be one way or the other?

Can we not admit that, as Lawrence says, the Catholic Church has its own problems (very serious ones), while also agreeing with asianpilgrim (and I happen to) that if this were occurring in the Catholic Church there would be an enormous and sustained outcry from bishops and laity alike?

That doesn't prove anything about either Church one way or another, necessarily. While the Church is spotless, the people who make it up most certainly are not.
