Murdered Iraqi bishop To Receive Path to Peace Award

New York City, N.Y., Jun 1, 2009 (CNA).-

The Chaldean Archbishop of Mosul Paulos Faraj Rahho will posthumously receive the 2009 Path to Peace Award, the Path to Peace Foundation has announced. The award will recognize Christians who have remained in Iraq to witness to their faith.

Archbishop Rahho was abducted by gunmen in Iraq on February 29, 2008 outside his church in Mosul as he drove home after a prayer service. He was found dead two weeks later, with his bodyguards and driver also having been murdered during his abduction. The archbishop was born in 1942 in Mosul. Ordained to the priesthood in June 1965, he was appointed to St. Isaiah’s Church in Mosul. He later founded the Church of the Sacred Heart at Tel Keppe, a new Mosul district.

Archbishop Rahho also opened an orphanage for disabled children.

He was ordained Chaldean Archbishop of Mosul on February 16, 2001, thus becoming responsible for about 20,000 Catholics in ten parishes. Mosul has one of the oldest Christian populations in the world.

The Path to Peace Award will be presented at a Gala Dinner at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City on June 9, 2009.

I wonder when he, Fr. Ragheed and the three subdeacons will be declared martyrs and saints of the Church. I'm sure that there are others as well...

May his memory be eternal!

I also just discovered this old blog, March 17, 2008, from the time of the murder which has a number of photos from Archbishop Rahho's funeral. The writer, John, is, or was, apparently a teacher at Babel Pontifical College, there under the auspices of the Mennonite Central Committee. He was writing to the Mennonite community and supporters of the MCC saying, "I’ll try to describe a little bit about the meaning and the context of this tragedy as it looks from here."

Reminder: In the "July Highlights" from EWTN it mentions they will be broadcasting "Christians of Nineveh" which showcases the plight of Christians in Iraq. Show times: July 15 10:00pm EDT, and July 18 5:00am EDT, 60 minutes in length. Closer to those dates I'd check again on their specials schedule page http://www.ewtn.com/tv/schedule_index.asp

It looks like this was first broadscast in 2008. http://ewtn.com/media/Iraq/index.asp Click on "CLICK To download entire story" below the main photo. This page is an archived page from the previous showing in 2008. Given the origional broadcast date the filming likely pre-dates the murder of Archbishop Rahho, of blessed memory.

His memory is ever-blessed!

Thanks for linking to the blog.

Here's a tidbit that I didn't know.
I learn something every day.

Quote:
Bishop Faraj was from Mosul. In Arabic, people refer to priests with the word abuna, which means “father.” It has a first-person plural ending (“we”), which conveys a collective sense that abuna is “our” father. Likewise, bishops are referred to as sayyidna, which means “lord” or “revered father,” also in a collective sense.

In my short time since November I had dinner with sayyidna Faraj at the seminary on several occasions. As we gathered around the table he would always stop to give me a smile and a handshake. He would grab my hand with one of his thick and soft grandfatherly hands, then give it a gentle pat with the other. “Shlonak azizi” (how are you my dear) he would say.
