ABRAHAM, OUR FATHER IN FAITH

A study in Scripture and Traditon to prepare for the great Feast of our Lord's birth.

Jesus came to us and was born for us in fulfillment of promises made by God to His people.
God made those promises through individuals we today call the Prophets.
One of the greatest of those Prophets is the righteous Abraham, one of three Prophets given the title "Patriarch".

In his Epistle, Saint James refers to Abraham as "the Friend of God" (James 2:24).
Saint Paul said of Abraham, "Yes, he is our father in the sight of God in Whom he believed..." (Romans 4: 17 excerpt)
Jesus said, "Your father, Abraham, rejoiced that he might see My day. He saw My day and was glad." (John 8: 56)

The Orthodox Christian, Byzantine Rite and Roman Catholic Churches commemorate the Righteous Abraham on October 9. In the Liturgical celebrations of these Churches Abraham is included in the Eucharistic prayers as well as those of Weddings, Funerals, the Blessing of Altars, Travelers and of Cemeteries.

From Abraham we learn of faithfulness, family relations, property ownership, hope for a better (and eternal) life, true worship and of simple, easy going friendship with God.
