Sadly, the same thing goes on in parishes, too, where people decide to get nasty over the most simple things. What makes me wonder about us Christians is the fact that, by comparison, when Moslems fight internally, they usually come together when an outsider attacks another Moslem. Christians, however, seem to take a perverse pleasure in seeing their own brethren attacked and seem to want to pile on.

Hmmm...good but unfortunate point.

This appears to be true, Sunni may blow up Shia and vice versa, but 'offend' the prophet and they stick together.

My question is--and I admit to not being the sharpest tool in the shed--what a simple birthday greeting has to do with dredging up so much vitriol, poison, and hatred? I just don't get it.

So for the next 365 days, Happy Birthday to each and every one of you here on the forum, even if we don't get together Sunday morning for Liturgy. There, that ought to get everyone in and all the bigots offended.

Oh, and Happy Birthday to the Pope, all the Orthodox Patriarchs, all the bishops of the world, and all the clergy, too.

Bob

Who publishes this stuff anyway?

While I could see a problem over the title "Ecumenical" attached to the Patriarch, he is a true Bishop and should be respected as much.

Father Stephanos:

You can find it at www.bigotsandunchristianpeople.com.

The reactions to the blog posting are themselves heartening, reflecting a common disavowal of such polemics, triumphalism, and anathema-hurling, but we've moved far from the topic of the news item.

With point made, I'm uncertain that there is more to be said in discussion on this point. We see it, we recognize it, we abhor it, and we are powerless ourselves to overcome it, except to pray.

If anyone wants to participate in/comment about an ongoing issue that elicits similar types of responses from certain quarters, see 'Can E&W Co-exist with Married Priests' in the E-W forum. The recent comment by an Opus Dei theologian on celibacy as a universal mandate for the Church - East & West (also commented on by the same blog as referenced here) - is now being addressed in that thread.

This thread is closed. Thanks to all who participated.

Many years,

Neil
