It took a lot of searching but it appears the Deacon holds the Orar and puts it over the arm at other times, same as it is done today . Photos of Old Rite Deacons are hard to come by on the internet it would seem.

But what about the number of fingers on each side of the orar? Been trying to work out how to hold it with an old rite sign of the cross. And yes photos are hard to find, I have found only one in my attempts!

The only photo I could find showed the deacon had the first two fingers and the thumb on one side and the last 2 fingers on the other side of the Orar. So when the Orar was held up the 2 last fingers away on the side away from the deacon.
