I am having trouble finding what is the Roman Catholic view of the atonement. From the CAF and encyclopedia it seems to be several answers... but NOT penal substitution. Yes I was listening to a podcast on ancientfaith radio (i think) and it was saying that almost all of western christianity believes in penal... and I am thinking that the RC church with 1B folks allegedly doesn't believe in it.. well that's a pretty substantial portion of western christians...

Anyways some clarity would be appreciated. smile

The simple fact is, there is no one Catholic view of the atonement; there are many Catholic views, including the views of the Eastern Fathers. At different periods of time a specific interpretation may have been dominant in teaching and preaching in specific parts of the Church; but no single view can claim to be the Catholic view to the exclusion of other catholic views. For example, take a look at this section of the Catholic Catechism. Does this sound like the underststanding of atonement that you have been told is THE Catholic understanding?

Fr. Kimel makes a good point. I'm not sure, but I think the link you gave to the Catechism didn't get included in your post.

Our friend Marduk can clearly explain this one. I've read his posts here and on other fora. I hope he sees this and posts what he has learned.

Over the years there have been many discussions on the Atonement and Marduk has made valuable contributions. His thoughts on the doctrine of the Atonement:

"I am wondering if the doctrine of the Atonement has a place in Eastern Catholicism."

I don't know if Forum rules allow me to link to the other Forum where Marduk made his contribution?

OK.. I found the Catholic (Latin Rite) view in Kreeft's book on the catechism. Basically it acknowledges that there are several different views of it, that no single view can adequately sum it up... the main point is that He died for our sins as the greatest act of love...
