I may have this in the wrong category and if so I would ask if a moderator could move it to the right place.

I came across the mention of a St Mark the Deaf-Mute in the Byzantine Menaion for January 2 (January 15 old calendar). I haven't found any information on him however other than the mention of him being commemorated.

Would anyone have more information and an icon on him?

Many thanks!

Hmm, not going to be able to help on this one. I'm guessing he's a Slav, as I don't find him in the Melkite calendar.

However, I do remember that the Latin Church nominates St Francis de Sales as patron of the deaf, because he is said to have developed a form of sign language to teach the faith to a deaf man.

I also know that St Rene Goupil, a Jesuit Brother, and one of the North American Martyrs was himself deaf.

Checking on-line, I see that St Francis de Sales shares that patronage with: St Cado or Cadoc of Llancarvan, a Welsh prince and, later, monk; St Meriadoc, a Welsh lord and, later, hermit-priest; St Owen of Rouen, nobleman and, later, Archbishop; and, St Drogo, Flemish nobleman and, later, hernit.

Perhaps one of our two experts in Celtic hagiography, Fathers Serge or Ambrose, can fill in the gaps as to the connections between the 2 Welsh saints and the deaf.

Many years,

Neil

Thanks for checking, Neil!

Here's some info that John Sanidopolous posted on Mystagogy:

St. Mark the Deaf

I see that the 4 early Saints whom I referenced above are also mentioned in the text you linked.

Many years,

Neil
