I had never before realized that the Syro-Malankara Church encouraged devotions to the Sacred Heart!

May God grant him many blessed years! Michael Thoma, Thank you for the link. I scrolled down the page to see the photos and there is one image that has left me absolutely curious to know more. I am assuming this is Benediction with the Most Holy Eucharist. In the Latin Church, the hands of the priest are covered with a humeral veil to signify that it is Christ Himself Who is giving the blessing. The photo shows a transparent veil over the monstrance as it is being lifted. Could you provide more details about this photo? Is this how Benediction is done in the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church?

Lord, grant unto Bishop Thomas Mor Eusebius holiness of life and wisdom to direct and guide the particular Church entrusted to him so that she may grow in your love. We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

So the Coonan Cross Oath was taken to facilitate devotions to the Sacred Heart and the use of the monstrance? How's that again?

The Malankara Orthodox church does not encourage devotions to the sacred heart. Nor have I ever come across such a thing in my life as an Orthodox Christians.
However catholic icons of Christ and St Mary with sacred hearts are often placed in homes and sometimes in chapels. But such a thing is done not because of devotion to the sacred heart, but because it is an Icon. Orthodox priests and bishops do write and discourage such devotions once in a while.
This is not to say that some Orthodox do not visit catholic shrines out of devotion.

God Bless aboon thomas mar eusebius
I dont think there is any sacred heart devotion in syro malankara church. Myselves not yet observed. Of course syro malabar and latins do have intense devotions of sacred heart.
Also regarding benediction. There is no benediction in syro malankara. Personally never seen anytime benediction for holy Eucharist in any regular qurbana.

Fr. Loya's radio program today, #313, included some background about the Syro-Malankara, as well as speaking of the upcoming Inauguration of the Exarchate of USA & Installation Ceremony of the Bishop on Sunday, October 3rd, 2010 at the Marianist Retreat Center in Uniondale, Long Island, New York.

Very interesting! Thanks for posting the link!
There were two or three errors made, though. First, the statistics on the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church are not up-to-date. The Church currently has two metropolitan provinces with a total of eight eparchies in Kerala. Also, the Maronite Church belongs to the West Syrian, not the East Syrian liturgical tradition. Finally, the program incorrectly gives the impression that only the East Syrian tradition uses Aramaic.

Two news reports of the enthronement: Bishop: Growth of Syro-Malankara Church in US Nourished by Grace Syro-Malankara Church welcomes new bishop Some biographical material on Aboon Thomas Mar Eusebius: http://stjudechurch.com/?cat=1To address PPJ's question as to the hierarchy in attendance, from the articles cited, these included: Major Archbishop & Catholicos Baselios Cleemis Thottunkal, Archbishop Timothy M. Dolan (Latin Archdiocese of New York), Bishop William Murphy (Latin Diocese of Rockville Centre, which I believe geographically encompasses the high school in which the ceremony was conducted), Archbishop Francis Chullikatt (Permanent Observer of the Vatican at the United Nations and a Latin, originally of the Archdiocese of Verapoly in Kerala, India) Although he isn't mentioned specifically, I would presume that Archbishop Pietro Sambi (Apostolic Nuncio to the US) was present. Francis Cardinal George (Latin Archdiocese of Chicago) and President of the USCCB was mentioned in one article and may well have been present. I saw two Byzantine bishops in procession - one may have been Bishop Nicholas Samra (Retired Auxiliary of the Eparchy of Newton of the Melkites) - at 0:49 ; I couldn't get a good enough view of the other - at 0:59 - to make even a tentative identification. I imagine that Bishop Jacob Angadiath (Eparchy of St Thomas the Apostle in Chicago of the Syro-Malabar) was in attendance, but I couldn't spot him. Wasn't able to spot any of the other non-Byzantine Eastern Catholic hierarchs (Armenian, Syriac, Chaldean, or Maronite), but they may be at the ME Synod. Many years, Neil

Great photo, Michael!
Ed, thanks - thought that Bishop John might have been the second Byzantine bishop whom I saw.
Many years,
Neil
