Jerusalem, Israel, Nov 24, 2010 / 01:49 am (CNA).- Those killed for their faith in Iraq should be recognized as saints, a group of Arab Christians says.

“We ask that the martyrs of Iraq be canonized, because the example of their lives and their sacrifice is an inspiration to us all as Christians, Arabs and non-(Arabs) alike, living in the Middle East,” the group commented, according to Fides.

More than 50 were killed in an Oct. 31 massacre at the Syrian Catholic Church of Our Lady of Salvation in Baghdad. The dead included two priests, Fr. Thair Sad-alla Abd-al and Fr. Waseem Sabeeh Al-kas Butros.

"Their names join the list of Christians who have died in Iraq for their faith, as Christians of the region continue to face a serious threat," the petition states. The organizers say they want to reaffirm their desire “to live our Christian faith in the same land where Christ died and rose for our salvation and where his apostles proclaimed the Good News to our ancestors.”

Asking that the martyred be recognized and honored as saints, they particularly mentioned the two priests and their companions killed at the Baghdad cathedral; the Chaldean sisters Fawzeiyah and Margaret Naoum, who were killed on March 26, 2007; Chaldean priest Fr. Raghid Aziz Ganni and subdeacons Yousef Aoud, Wahid Hanna Isho and Gassan Issam Bidawid, who were killed in Mosul on June 3, 2007.

They also listed Chaldean Archbishop of Mosul Paulos Faraj, who was found dead on March 13, 2008, after being kidnapped by militants.

The list includes several Orthodox Christian priests and a Protestant minister.

The website for the petition is located at Martyrs of Iraq

I came across this moving article and wanted to share it with the readers here.

http://www.asianews.it/news-en/I-try-to-...hdad-20130.html

The thought of fellow Christians being slaughtered in the sanctity of their Temple with their priest as they awaited the reception of the Holy Mysteries should haunt all of us - be we Orthodox or Catholic.

I would suggest that readers may also link to:

http://www.speroforum.com/site/article.a...tyrs+of+Baghdad

May we Christians lay aside our petty earthly disagreements, distractions and vanities as we await the birth of our Saviour.

Let us pause for a moment and pray for the souls of the new Christian Martyrs of Iraq who whose blood is indeed the seed of the Church as they await the Resurrection and their eternal reward, hand in hand with all of the Holy Martyrs of the centuries. Eternal be their memories.

Let us also pray for all oppressed Christians in the Holy Land, across the Mideast and wherever they may be found in this world. Lord, have mercy.

Deliver us, O Lord, from the evil works of the terrorists who dare to call themselves 'martyrs' as they commit their pernicious deeds slaughtering the most vulnerable of your peoples. We beseech the Theotokas that she may intercede on their behalf and protect the faithful in the Mideast and Iraq with her Holy Veil as she did for the Christians at Blachernae.

Troparion of the Pokrov (Tone 4)

Today the faithful celebrate the feast with joy
illumined by your coming, O Theotokas.
Beholding your pure image we fervently cry to you:
"Encompass us beneath the precious veil of your protection;
deliver us from every form of evil by entreating Christ,
your Son and our God that He may save our souls."

Kontakion (Tone 3)

Today the Virgin stands in the midst of the Church
and with choirs of saints she invisibly prays to God for us.
Angels and bishops worship,
apostles and prophets rejoice together,
since for our sake she prays to the pre-eternal God.

The article, the intensity of the description of the events, is both chilling and heroic in the telling of what transpired. Thank you, David, for posting this link.

Many years,

Neil

Should there be an official cause for their canonization to Rome, the Holy Father would only be able to canonize those martyrs who were Catholic.

It would be interesting to see if the Syriac Orthodox Church canonizes the three S.O. priests on the list.

There is nothing in particular to forbid the Holy Father to "canonize" Orthodox martyrs; John Paul II said clearly that martyrs have overcome divisions by their perfect unity in Christ. The same would seem to apply to Non-Chalcedonians.

Out of consideration for the sensitivity of others, Rome does not as a rule involve herself in such matters, but a simple request from the Orthodox authorities would probably meet with a positive response.
