The Anaphora in Church Slavonic from Christ the Saviour Cathedral, ACROD, Johnstown, PA this Sunday, December 19, 2010 with responses in Carpatho-Russian/Rusyn plain chant. It is good to hear Metropolitan Nicholas' voice sounding strong as he has been ill much of this past year. The responses were led by St. Nicholas Choir, Homestead, PA. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qqDUtBFnsYQ

Beautiful! With a note or two of variation that is my childhood, and the foundation of my life!

LOL! Not long ago I had a pastor ask me if I'd move to his town to be the parish cantor. I jokingly told him "Yes, if you start Vespers and become and All-Slavonic parish". I think he would do it if it were possible. Amazing how we are all on the same page in Slavonic.

I used to be a devoted vernacularist, but I have been forced to reconsider my position.

This was beloved intonation of the late Metropolitan Orestes Chornock. The current Metropolitan Nicholas and my late father were probably the last of his students to chant this in the Slavonic. I am a vernacularist, but with a warm place in my heart for the old ways and it really doesn't sound as majestic in English to my ears.

Lot to be said for using Slavonic as a way of avoiding "us all", "always and everywhere", "for us and our salvation", and all of the other unfortunate mistranslations.

The Divine Liturgy from which this YouTube video was excerpted was wonderful. His Eminence was the main celebrant, assisted by eight priests, four deacons, subdeacons from the Seminary, and altar servers from the Cathedral. The choir from Homestead did a magnificent job with the responses. The Cathedral was filled to capacity, and then some. The day before, Metropolitan Nicholas tonsured three men as readers, and ordained five men as subdeacons.

All in all, it was a glorious weekend for the diocese and the whole Church!

Beautiful! Thank you for posting it, David.

Many years,

Just a bump in memory of Metropolitan Nicholas.
